LOS ANGELES -- Bailey Martinez scored a second-half equalizer as the No. 24 Cal State LA women's soccer team remained unbeaten with a 1-1 draw against Vanguard Saturday at University Stadium.
The Golden Eagles, making their first appearance in the national rankings this season after beginning the year receiving votes, moved to 3-0-2. Vanguard moved to 1-4-1.
Cal State LA controlled much of the contest and finished with an 18-6 advantage in shots, an 11-5 edge in shots on goal and a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Golden Eagles generated 10 shots during a scoreless opening half. Vanguard goalkeeper Grayton Normand made six saves before halftime, stopping attempts from Analise Quintero, Lizbet Saligan, Maitland Kohoutek, Briana Chagolla and Martinez.
Vanguard opened the scoring at the 50:30 mark when Hailey Garvin found the back of the net to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.
Cal State LA immediately increased its pressure. Quintero and Martinez each placed shots on target, and Martinez struck the crossbar in the 68th minute.
The Golden Eagles' persistence paid off at the 76:29 mark when Martinez scored the equalizer to make it 1-1. Martinez nearly added another goal moments later but sent her next attempt wide.
Cal State LA earned five corner kicks over the final 21 minutes and continued to search for the winning goal. The Golden Eagles took four shots following Martinez's equalizer, but the match remained tied through the final whistle.
Martinez and Quintero led Cal State LA with five shots apiece. Martinez placed three attempts on goal, while Quintero recorded a match-high four shots on target. Chagolla added two shots, both of which were on goal.
Kendyl Sumlin played all 90 minutes in goal for the Golden Eagles and made four saves. Normand finished with 10 saves for Vanguard.
The Golden Eagles begin conference play at home on Friday against Cal Poly Pomona beginning at 4 p.m.
