PORTLAND, ORE. -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team had four players honored on the 2023 Division II Conference Commissioners Association All-West Region teams announced on Tuesday, including the West Region Player of the Year for the second time in three seasons.
Senior midfielder
Oliver Diaz was named the West Region Player of the Year, joining Morten Bjoershol as the program's only two players to be named the DII CCA West Region Player of the Year. Bjoershol became the first Golden Eagle to be named the DII CCA West Region Player of the Year when he took the top honor in 2021. The D2 CCA Player of the Year and all-region teams are nominated and selected by the region's sports information directors. The program started under a different sponsorship in 2006.
Diaz was joined on the first-team All-Region team by forward
Bryan Ortega and defender
Andrew Portis, while goalkeeper
Julian Aadlandsvik received second-team honors.
Diaz, who was named the California Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Year earlier this month, has led the Golden Eagles to a 17-1-2 record and a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Super Region 4, which resumes later this week in Wichita Texas. The Golden Eagles, who have claimed CCAA regular-season and tournament championships, will face No. 3 seed Cal Poly Pomona on Friday at 10 a.m. PST on the campus of No. 1 seed Midwestern State.
Diaz has started 19 of the 20 games this season and is tied for third on the team in scoring with four goals and two assists for 10 points. He earned first-team All-Region honors from the D2 CCA for a second straight season.
Ortega, Cal State LA's leading scorer, has 10 goals and four assists for 24 points. He is also earning first-team All-Region honors from the D2 CCA for a second straight season. Earlier this month, he earned first-team All-CCAA honors for a second straight season.
Portis is enjoying the best season of his Cal State LA career and has earned All-Region honors for the first time. He has 17 of the 18 games he has played in this season and has one goal and one assist. Earlier, he earned first-team All-CCAA honors as well.
Aadlandsvik has had a sensational season for the Golden Eagles in his first year as a starter. He has started and played in every minute of Cal State LA's 20 games this season and he currently leads the nation with a .916 saves percentage and is tied for the national lead with 15 shutouts. He is also fourth in the nation in goals against average of 0.396.
Cal State LA led all program with three first-team selections and the four total was tied with Point Loma, which had two first-team and two second-team selections. Cal Poly Pomona and Simon Fraser had three total selections each.
The 13 members of the All-West Region first team will now be placed on the national ballot for All-America consideration. The All-America teams will be released Wednesday, December 6.
