Ceja scores twice to keep #1 Cal State LA unbeaten

ATHERTON -- Diego Ceja made the most of his opportunities Thursday, scoring both goals to lead Cal State LA's men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Menlo at Wunderlich Field.

Ceja came off the bench to score once in each half, helping the Golden Eagles remain unbeaten and improve to 13-0-1. He finished with three shots, all on goal, in just 28 minutes of action.

His first goal gave Cal State LA the lead late in the opening half, while his second came on a spectacular chip from 35 yards out to provide insurance after the break.

Abraham Ramirez made three saves to complete the shutout as the Golden Eagles outshot the Oaks, 23-9, and held a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks. Menlo fell to 6-5-2.

Ceja entered the match at 28:48 and put Cal State LA ahead less than 10 minutes later. Jacob Cervantes delivered a cross from the left side, and Ceja headed it home from the top of the six-yard box at 38:18 for a 1-0 lead.

The Golden Eagles finished the first half with a 12-4 advantage in shots and seven corner kicks, but Menlo goalkeeper Vebjoern Madshus made three saves to keep the margin at one goal.

Ceja needed even less time to make an impact in his second stint on the field. After returning at 63:55, he stole the ball from a defender and chipped a shot over Madshus from 35 yards out at 65:03, doubling Cal State LA's lead just 68 seconds after reentering.

He nearly added a third goal at 68:46, but Madshus stopped his shot toward the lower-left corner.

Cal State LA continued to generate chances, recording 11 shots in the second half and finishing with 10 shots on goal. Emil Kischka led the Golden Eagles with four attempts, while Ceja, Jose Lopez, Felix Alverdale and Saad Faiz each had three.

Ramirez helped preserve the shutout with two late saves, stopping Hugo Few at 84:24 and Diego Ruiz at 88:25.

Madshus finished with seven saves before giving way to Jaxon Tonley, who made one save over the final 18:04.
