LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team completed a successful opening weekend of California Collegiate Athletic Association play with a shutout win over Cal State Monterey Bay on Senior Day.
Jassmin Ortiz scored the lone goal of the game in the first half and the Golden Eagles went on to a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the Otters in University Stadium. Cal State LA (5-1-2, 2-0 CCAA) picked up its third straight win and posted a shutout for the third time in the past four games.
Taesja Paopao made one save for the shutout, while Cal State Monterey Bay's Aubrey McKessy made seven saves for the Otters.
Shelby Melin, who scored two goals in a 4-1 win over San Francisco State on Friday, was active once again on Sunday and had a match-high five shots, including three on goal.
Alice Hernandez had three shots.
Ortiz had another strong game for the Golden Eagles and accounted for the only goal of the game, her second of the season and second in two games.
Erin Schrock, one of the five seniors honored in pregame ceremonies, had the assist as she started the Golden Eagles on a two-on-one break and slid a perfectly placed pass to a sprinting Ortiz, who rifled a shot from inside the box off the far post and in for the goal.
