HAYWARD -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team showed a lot of determination and resiliency in a 1-1 tie Friday night against Cal State East Bay at Pioneer Field.
After dominating a scoreless first half, the Golden Eagles suddenly found themselves trailing early in the second period before responding well with a game-tying goal from

The Golden Eagles, though, did not panic after facing a deficit for the first time in conference play. Cal State LA increased the pressure and nearly tied the game when a nifty shot off an attempt clearance by
Erin Schrock struck the right post. The Golden Eagles regained possession about 30 seconds later and a cross into the box by
Shelby Melin was shot into the net by Hernandez, who tucked her shot just inside the left post.
It was the first goal of the season for Hernandez and the second of her Cal State LA career.

Skylynn Rodriguez had good bids saved by Smith in the first 14 minutes. A shot by Hernandez was cleared away by a defender 16 minutes in and a shot by
Liliana Gonzalez about 90 seconds later was also cleared away by a defender before going in.
Jassmin Ortiz had a great opportunity going against Smith in the box, but the Cal State East Bay goalkeeper was able to stop her chance and Gonzalez dribbled into the box and had a strong shot sail over the crossbar in the 35th minute. A final chance before half by Hernandez on a free kick was tipped over the crossbar by Smith.
Cal State East Bay took the first three shots of the second half and grabbed the lead on the third one, Cox's first goal of the season.
Melin and
Alice Hernandez teamed up for the equalizer less than nine minutes later and the Golden Eagles earned the tie.
