SAN MARCOS -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team battled to its second consecutive California Collegiate Athletic Association draw Sunday at Cal State San Marcos.
The Golden Eagles, who were coming off a 1-1 tie at Cal State East Bay on Friday, recorded their fifth shutout of the season in a 0-0 tie against the Cougars in The Cage. Cal State LA (5-1-4, 2-0-2 CCAA) and Cal State San Marcos (5-3-2, 2-0-2 CCAA) remain in a third-place tie in conference play. Both teams trail first-place Cal Poly Pomona by four points and second-place Cal Poly Humboldt by one point..
The game figured to be a tight defensive battle and it certainly was. Cal State LA has allowed only six goals in its first 10 games of the season, while Cal State San Marcos has allowed five.
Cal State LA had a 6-5 advantage in shots for the game and the Golden Eagles did not allow a shot on goal in the contest. The Golden Eagles had a 6-4 edge in corner kicks, including a 4-1 advantage in the second half.
The best scoring chance of the game was a bid for Cal State LA in the 58th minute. Following a corner kick,
Erin Schrock was fouled in the box and the Golden Eagles were awarded a penalty kick.
Shelby Melin's try sailed just over the crossbar and the score remained 0-0.
Cal State LA did not allow a shot over the final 36 minutes of the game and had three late corner kicks, but couldn't score. Melin had a shot sail wide in the 88th minute for the game's final attempt.
Jassmin Ortiz had a match-high three shots for the Golden Eagles, including a hard shot from inside the box in the first half that was saved by Cal State San Marcos goalkeeper Allison Marcure, who made a diving stop to deflect away for a corner kick. Melin had a pair of shots and
Destiny Moedano also had a shot.
Taesja Paopao was masterful once again thwarting corner kicks and crosses into the box despite not facing an official shot on goal.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a road contest at conference-leading Cal Poly Pomona.
