POMONA -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team used a big second-quarter surge to take control in a big California Collegiate Athletic Association win at Cal Poly Pomona.
The Golden Eagles closed the second quarter with a 15-0 run and went on to a 67-56 win over the Broncos in Kellogg Arena. Cal State LA (7-5, 4-3 CCAA) responded nicely after its tough loss at Cal State San Marcos on Sunday and picked up an important win over Cal Poly Pomona (8-3, 5-2 CCAA).

Nicole Flennaugh led a balanced Cal State LA attack with a game-high 16 points and knocked down another four 3-pointers.
Olivia Hodges had 10 points on a perfect night, hitting all four of her field-goal attempts and both her free-throw tries andÂ
Raya Smith had eight points, two rebounds and two steals.
Breanna Ha and Sydney Fedinec led Cal Poly Pomona with 11 points each.
Nevaeh Asiasi had nine points, four rebounds and four assists,Â
Lily Buggs had eight points, seven rebounds and two assists and
Yesenia Smith had eight points, six rebounds and three assists for the Golden Eagles. Nine players scored points in the game for Cal State LA.
Cal State LA shot 45.3 percent for the game (24-of-53) and was 8-of-21 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were also 11-of-17 from the free-throw line. Cal Poly Pomona shot just 31 percent for the game (18-of-58) and was 8-of-22 from 3-point range. The Broncos were 12-of-16 from the free-throw line. Cal State LA was out-rebounded by a narrow 36-35 margin and committed 20 turnovers to 18 for the Broncos.
The Golden Eagles trailed 16-10 late in the first quarter, but a 3-pointer by Flennaugh made it 16-13 at the end of the period. Cal State LA then took control of the game with a 22-5 advantage in the second quarter. The Golden Eagles scored the first seven points of the period on a 3-pointer by
Ashley Orozco, a pair of free throws by
Yesenia Smith and a layup by Buggs to take a 20-16 lead before the Broncos took their lead of the game at 21-20 after a quick 5-0 run.
The Golden Eagles, though, promptly scored the last 15 points of the half to take command. A layup by
Raya Smith gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good.
Yesenia Smith and Flennaugh hit 3-pointers to make it 28-21, baskets by Buggs and Flennaugh made it 32-21 and a 3-pointer by Flennaugh gave the Golden Eagles their 35-21 halftime lead.
Cal State LA took its biggest lead of the game at 39-22 after layups by Buggs and Asiasi and matched that with a 46-29 edge after another layup by Asiasi midway through the period. Cal Poly Pomona sliced the deficit to nine points before a pair of free throws by
Yesenia Smith gave the Golden Eagles a 48-37 lead entering the final period.
Cal State LA maintained at least a seven-point lead the rest of the way and put the game out of reach after a pair of free throws by Hodges, a 3-pointer by Asiasi and a pair of free throws by
Raya Smith made it 61-47 with three minutes left.Â
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a road game at Cal State San Bernardino.
