SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team had its impressive depth on full display Saturday while picking up an important and hard-fought California Collegiate Athletic Association road win.
The Golden Eagles had 10 players score in a 53-50 victory over Cal State San Bernardino in The Den. Cal State LA (8-5, 5-3 CCAA) grabbed the lead in the first quarter and held off a determined Cal State San Bernardino team the rest of the way. Neither team enjoyed a double-digit lead until the Golden Eagles finally pulled away down the stretch. Cal State LA's defense was a big part of the win, limiting Cal State San Bernardino to just nine fourth-quarter points and only one over the final six minutes after the Yotes had closed to within one point. The Golden Eagles scored the last 10 points of the game over the final 4:29.
Jada Johnson and
Nicole Flennaugh both had 12 points to lead a balanced Cal State LA effort. Johnson had 12 points, five rebounds and two blocks, while Flennaugh had 12 points, including six via a pair of 3-pointers while maintaining her conference lead in that department with 43 on the season.
Raya Smith had nine points and three rebounds.
Destiny Jackson had a game-high 14 points, four rebounds and five assists for Cal State San Bernardino (7-7, 2-6 CCAA).
Nevaeh Asiasi had nine points and three rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while
Lily Buggs had six points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
Cal State LA shot 44.3 percent for the game (27-of-61) and was just 2-of-11 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 7-of-11 from the free-throw line. Cal State San Bernardino shot 35 percent (21-of-60) and was just 4-of-20 from 3-point range. The Yotes were 4-of-9 from the free-throw line.
Cal State LA had a 43-36 rebounding edge and committed 11 turnovers to 12 for the Yotes.
Yesenia Smith had eight rebounds for the Golden Eagles and
Olivia Hodges had six. Both players scored four points.
The Golden Eagles surrendered the first five points of the game, but scored the next seven, including a go-ahead basket from
Tiara Scott. After the Yotes took an 8-7 lead, the Golden Eagles got another basket from Scott and a pair of free throws by Asiasi and never trailed again. A layup by Flennaugh and a pair of free throws by Buggs following a steal by Silivia Fonogaloa gave the Golden Eagles a 17-12 lead after one quarter.
The Golden Eagles never led by more than eight points in the second period and grabbed the margin at halftime, 32-24, thanks to a layup by
Raya Smith.
A layup by Asiasi to open the third quarter gave the Golden Eagles their first double-digit lead at 34-24, but the Yotes went on a 12-2 run to tie the game at 36-36. Cal State LA responded with a 3-pointer from Flennaugh and baskets from Buggs and Hodges to take a 43-36 lead and a layup by
Yesenia Smith late in the period gave the Golden Eagles a 46-41 lead entering the final quarter.
Cal State LA saw its lead sliced to one point early in the fourth quarter, but a 3-pointer by Flennaugh began a game-ending 13-1 run over the final five minutes as the Golden Eagles scored the final 10 points of the game.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a road game at Cal Poly Humboldt.
