Golden Eagles Earn A Big CCAA Road Victory

ARCATA -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team got off to a roaring start Thursday and never let up in an impressive California Collegiate Athletic Association victory over Cal Poly Humboldt.

The Golden Eagles led from start to finish in a 76-60 win over the 'Jacks in Lumberjack Arena. Cal State LA (9-5, 6-3 CCAA) won its third straight game - all on the road - and is now in sole possession fourth place in the conference.

Lily Buggs had an outstanding game, leading all scorers with 21 points and also contributing 15 rebounds, six assists and three steals. Buggs recorded a season-high in rebounds and recorded her sixth double-double of the season. She leads the conference in rebounding with 9.5 boards per game.

Nicole Flennaugh, the conference's leading 3-point shooter, had 18 points and was a nifty 4-of-8 from 3-point range. Jada Johnson had 10 points and six rebounds and Olivia Hodges also had 10 points and six rebounds to give the Golden Eagles four scorers in double figures.

Madison Parry had a team-high 17 points for Cal Poly Humboldt (6-7, 4-5 CCAA), while Devon Lewis had 16 points.

Nevaeh Asiasi had eight points and had a pair of 3-pointers for the Golden Eagles, who got contributions from all 12 players in the contest and got scoring production from eight.

Cal State LA shot 38.6 percent for the game (27-of-70) and was 9-of-21 from 3-point range. Cal Poly Humboldt shot 37.5 percent (21-of-56) and was 6-of-24 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 13-of-19 from the free-throw line, while the 'Jacks were 12-of-18. Cal State LA enjoyed a big 43-34 rebounding edge, including a 17-6 edge in offensive rebounds. The Golden Eagles committed 13 turnovers to 16 for the 'Jacks.

The Golden Eagles got a game-opening basket from Johnson and two straight baskets from Buggs to open up a quick 6-0 lead and never looked back. Buggs hit a free throw and Hodges hit four straight free throws to close out the first quarter and the Golden Eagles built a 20-11 lead.

Buggs hit a 3-pointer to give the Golden Eagles their first double-digit lead at 23-13 and a 3-pointer by Flennaugh and a basket from Silvia Fonogaloa built the lead to 28-13.
Buggs then scored all seven points during a 7-0 run that gave the Golden Eagles a 41-22 halftime lead.

Buggs made it nine straight points with the opening basket of the third quarter that pushed the lead to 43-22. Cal Poly Humboldt was able to trim the lead to 13 points before a 3-pointer by Flennaugh and a pair of free throws by Buggs gave the Golden Eagles a 58-40 lead after three periods.

A 3-pointer by Asiasi gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead at 69-46 and they matched that advantage on a basket by Johnson that made it 71-48 with 4:23 to go.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a road game at Sonoma State.
