Golden Eagles Stay On Course With Win Over Yotes

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team put forth a winning performance on Thursday against a determined Cal State San Bernardino squad.

The Golden Eagles finally enjoyed some breathing room in the third quarter and then held off the Yotes, 74-63, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in University Gym. Cal State LA (12-6, 9-4 CCAA) won its second straight game and its fifth in its last six contests and pulled into a three-way tie for third place in the conference with Cal Poly Pomona and Chico State. 

Nicole Flennaugh led three Golden Eagles in double figures with 18 points, knocking down four 3-pointers in the game and closing to within two of the program's career record. Nevaeh Asiasi scored the Golden Eagles' first 11 points and finished with 15 points and six rebounds in one of her best games of the season and Lily Buggs had another strong game with 12 points, 12 rebounds and five assists.

Jaida Jackson led Cal State San Bernardino with 15 points, four assists and five steals. Mia Dufresne had 14 points and a game-high 15 rebounds and Destiny Jackson had 10 points and six rebounds.

Yesenia Smith had eight points for the Golden Eagles and Ashley Orozco had six points, five rebounds and four assists.

Cal State LA shot 40.5 percent for the game (30-of-74) and was 7-of-19 from 3-point range. Cal State San Bernardino shot 32.8 percent (21-of-64) and was 8-of-21 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 7-of-11 from the free-throw line, while the Yotes were 13-of-22. Cal State LA had a 50-43 rebounding edge and committed 17 turnovers to 18 for the Yotes.

Asiasi got off to a sizzling start and scored the Golden Eagles' first 11 points, enabling Cal State LA to hold an 11-9 lead before ending the quarter with a surge. A Buggs layup and Flennaugh 3-pointer pushed the advantage to 16-9 and a layup by Orozco gave Cal State LA an 18-13 lead after one period.

The Yotes made a strong run in the second quarter and tied the score at 25-25 before a 3-pointer by Yesenia Smith and a layup by Raya Smith gave the Golden Eagles a 30-25 edge. A 3-pointer by Flennaugh late in the second quarter gave the Golden Eagles a 40-33 halftime lead.

The Golden Eagles saw the lead sliced to six points, 42-36, before a layup by Johnson, a 3-pointer by Flennaugh, three free throws by Flennaugh and baskets by Asiasi and Flennaugh fueled a 12-0 run that gave the Golden Eagles a 54-36 advantage. Cal State LA took a 20-point lead, 58-38, after a layup by Orozco and settled for a 58-42 lead entering the final period.

The Yotes got as close as 12 points in the fourth quarter, but back-to-back layups by Buggs and a layup by Olivia Hodges extended the lead to 68-50 with four minutes left and Cal State LA led by double-digit margins down the stretch.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home game against Cal Poly Pomona at 1 p.m.
