LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team got to celebrate a new personal career record as well as an important California Collegiate Athetic Association victory Saturday afternoon.
Nicole Flennaugh knocked down five 3-pointers to set a new program career record and the Golden Eagles beat Cal Poly Pomona, 86-76, in an entertaining game in University Gym. Flennaugh now has 221 successful 3-pointers in her career, surpassing the old mark of 218 by Kelli Kobayashi, who completed her Cal State LA career in 2003.
It was a monumental day for the Cal State LA program as well as the Golden Eagles swept the regular-season series with the Broncos, who have won five national championships, for the first time since 2013.Â
Cal State LA (13-6, 10-4 CCAA) is now tied for third in the conference with Chico State after the Wildcats also won on Saturday, knocking off unbeaten Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson.
Flennaugh finished with 18 points on Saturday and set the record with a 3-pointer - her third of the game - at the 6:40 mark of the second quarter. It was a big basket, too, as it came during a 12-0 run that pulled the Golden Eagles back from a 23-16 deficit and into a 28-23 lead.
Lily Buggs led the Golden Eagles with 22 points and nine rebounds and had a sensational second half, scoring 18 of her 22 points after halftime, including 10 in the fourth quarter.Â
Ally Bates had a game-high 26 points for Cal Poly Pomona (12-6, 9-5 CCAA), while Alicia Jones had 24 points and seven rebounds.
Jada Johnson had 14 points and seven rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while
Nevaeh Asiasi had 13 points and two assists.
Cal State LA shot 47.2 percent overall (34-of-72) and was 11-of-32 from 3-point range. Cal Poly Pomona shot 44 percent (33-of-75) and was 9-of-24 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 7-of-11 from the free-throw line, while the Broncos were 1-of-2. Cal State LA had a 40-39 rebounding edge and committed 13 turnovers to 16 for the Broncos.
Jones got off to an electric start for the Broncos, scoring 11 early points while leading the Broncos to a 17-14 lead after one quarter. The Broncos took a 23-16 lead after a three-point play by Bates, but the Golden Eagles went on a 12-0 run to take the lead.
Yesenia Smith and Flennaugh hit back-to-back 3-pointers and Buggs scored on a layup to put the Golden Eagles ahead, 24-23. Buggs scored again and
Raya Smith scored on a layup after a steal and assist from
Yesenia Smith to complete the run and give the Golden Eagles a 28-23 lead. The Broncos then scored five straight points to tie it before Cal State LA took a 38-36 lead at halftime.
A 3-pointer by Buggs and a basket by Johnson extended the lead to 47-39, but Cal Poly Pomona sliced the deficit to one point at 47-46 and again at 49-48. A jumper by Flennaugh and a 3-pointer by Buggs were followed by a layup by Asiasi and a free throw by
Yesenia Smith that pushed the lead back to nine points, 57-48, after three quarters.
Flennaugh hit two quick 3-pointers to open the fourth quarter to open up a 63-50 lead and 3-pointers by Asiasi and
Amaya Fuentes gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead at 69-54 with 7:25 remaining. Cal Poly Pomona got as close as six points at 74-68 with four minutes left, but a 3-pointer by Buggs, two free throws by
Olivia Hodges and a steal and basket by Buggs gave the Golden Eagles an 81-68 advantage with two minutes remaining.
Cal State LA will be on the road next week, beginning with a game at San Francisco State on Thursday.
