Golden Eagles Fall Short Against No. 10 Toros

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team gave it a shot, but the Golden Eagles were unable to hand unbeaten Cal State Dominguez Hills its first loss of the season.

The Golden Eagles had trouble executing against Cal State Dominguez Hills' pressuring defense and fell to the No. 10 Toros, 75-59, Thursday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest in University Gym. Cal State LA (10-6, 7-4 CCAA) shot just 31 percent for the game and was just 8-of-31 in the second half while Cal State Dominguez Hills (17-0, 11-0 CCAA) slowly pulled away.

The Golden Eagles trailed by just six points at halftime and stayed within striking distance until late in the fourth quarter. Cal State Dominguez Hills simply responded after every Cal State LA challenge.

Lily Buggs had 18 points and 13 rebounds to record her seventh double-double of the season for the Golden Eagles, while Nicole Flennaugh had 17 points and three assists.

Allyah Cartajena had a game-high 20 points and 12 rebounds for the Toros, while Dawnyel Lair had 17 points, six rebounds and five steals.

Tiara Scott had seven points, three assists and three rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Jada Johnson had six points and eight rebounds.

Cal State LA was 20-of-64 overall and just 6-of-26 from 3-point range. Cal State Dominguez Hills shot 41.3 percent for the game (26-of-63) and was 5-of-19 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 13-of-19 from the free-throw line, while the Toros were 19-of-24. Cal State LA was out-rebounded, 45-37 and committed 21 turnovers to 15 for Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Cal State LA led early, 6-5, after back-to-back baskets from Buggs and took an 11-10 lead after a 3-pointer by Yesenia Smith. The Toros, though, took the lead for good with a quarter-closing 12-0 run and held a 22-11 lead after the first period.

Cal State LA trailed by as many as 17 points in the second quarter, but got a 3-pointer by Buggs and a basket from Amaya Fuentes to make it 37-31 at halftime.

Cal State LA surrendered the first five points of the third quarter and was outscored, 17-11, in the period to trail 54-42 entering the final quarter. A basket by Ashley Orozco to open the period made it 54-44, but that's as close as the Golden Eagles would get. A 3-pointer by Flennaugh kept the Golden Eagles within 62-51 with five minutes to go, but the Toros were able to hold on for the win.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home game against Cal State East Bay.
