Golden Eagles Battle To 0-0 Tie With Monterey Bay

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team battled to a 0-0 tie Friday night in the California Collegiate Athletic Association opener against Cal State Monterey Bay.

The Golden Eagles (3-2-2, 0-0-1 CCAA) and Otters (3-2-3, 0-0-1 CCAA) engaged in a spirited contest that saw an entertaining ebb and flow throughout. Each team had its dangerous moments in the attacking zone, only to see the two defenses stand tall when it mattered most.

Areli Reyes made three saves for the Golden Eagles to record her fourth shutout of the season. Maleni Morales made six saves for the Otters.

Cal State LA had a 15-8 advantage in shots and a 6-2 edge in corner kicks, but was unable to break the scoreless tie.

Shelby Melin had six shots for the Golden Eagles, including two on goal. She had probably the best chance of the game when her bid got past Morales in the 88th minute and seemed destined to find the net, only to have a Cal State Monterey Bay defender head the ball out of danger to preserve the scoreless match. She also had a shot go off the crossbar in the 58th minute.

Kaelah Basurto had a pair of shots in 55 good minutes off the bench and Erin Schrock was a consistent threat in her 63 minutes of play, especially late in the game when her speed and determination resulted in some good chances for a game-winning tally.

Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday with a home match against Cal State Dominguez Hills at 2 p.m.
