LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team used a stifling defensive effort and some opportunistic offensive strikes to earn an important California Collegiate Athletic Association victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The Golden Eagles scored a goal in each half and permitted only three shots against in a 2-0 victory over the Toros Sunday in University Stadium. Cal State LA (4-2-2, 1-0-1) didn't allow a goal in its first two matches of conference play.
Liliana Gonzalez opened the scoring in the 18th minute when she headed in a free kick from
Destiny Moedano. The goal was the first of the season for Gonzalez, while the assist was the third of the season for Moedano, who leads the team.
Cal State LA made it 2-0 in the 63rd minute on a penalty kick goal by
Thaiz Hernandez.
Erin Schrock drew the penalty in the box and Hernandez converted for her first goal of the season.
The Golden Eagles had some other outstanding opportunities. Moedano had a shot that was tipped by Cal State Dominguez Hills goalkeeper Alyssa Newsom off the crossbar and away.
Skylynn Rodriguez also had a good scoring opportunity, but Newsome made a diving stop to prevent the goal.
Newsom also made a nice save of a shot by
Alice Hernandez.
Areli Reyes made three saves for the Golden Eagles to post her fifth shutout of the season, while Newsom made four saves.
Cal State LA had a 9-3 advantage in shots and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.
Gonzalez had two shots, while
Jaclyn Orozco,
Thaiz Hernandez,
Shelby Melin,
Bryanna Avina, Rodriguez,
Alice Hernandez and
Kimberly Gamez also had shots.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday at Cal Poly Humboldt.
