ARCATA -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team stared down a late 1-0 deficit before a big boot from
Thaiz Hernandez lifted the Golden Eagles to a tie.
An onrushing Hernandez drilled a ball from deep that found the inside of the left post with traffic in front in the 80th minute to give the Golden Eagles a 1-1 draw at Cal Poly Humboldt on Friday at College Creek Field. Cal State LA (4-2-3, 1-0-2 CCAA) was playing its first road match of the season after playing its first eight games in University Stadium. It looked for awhile like the Golden Eagles would leave frustrated and without any conference points.
Cal State LA had a decided advantage in possession, but a saved penalty shot in the first five minutes and a Cal Poly Humboldt goal in the 28th minute following a failed clearance had the Golden Eagles chasing the game. That pursuit finally paid dividends when Hernandez notched her second goal of the season. She started the sequence with a free kick from about 40 yards out that was sent back out by the Cal Poly Humboldt defense. Hernandez, though, at full speed, got to the ball first and nailed a shot that sailed toward the goal. With
Erin Schrock providing some quality distraction in front, the ball went through the goalkeeper's outstretched arms by the far post and into the goal.
Cal State LA had a 12-5 advantage in shots with an 8-4 edge in the first half and a 4-1 advantage in the second half. The Golden Eagles had the game's only two corner kicks.
Schrock,
Melody Landphear and
Skylynn Rodriguez had two shots each for the Golden Eagles.
Areli Reyes made one save for the Golden Eagles, while Carson Thomson-Terrel made three saves for Cal Poly Humboldt (3-3-3, 0-1-2 CCAA).
Cal State LA will return to action at Chico State on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
