Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Golden Eagles Are Masterful In Win Over Wildcats

CHICO -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team turned in its best performance of the season Sunday in an important California Collegiate Athletic Association contest at Chico State.

The Golden Eagles delivered a stifling defensive effort and got a first-half goal from Erin Schrock to post a 1-0 victory over the Wildcats in University Soccer Stadium. Cal State LA (5-2-3, 2-0-2 CCAA) is the lone team still unbeaten in conference play and pulled to within one point of co-leaders Sonoma State and Cal State San Marcos after the first two weeks of conference play. The Golden Eagles knocked the Wildcats (5-2-3, 2-1-1 CCAA), who were ranked second in the region in the latest United Soccer Coaches rankings entering the week, out of first place with the result.

Cal State LA picked up its first win in Chico State since 2012.

The performance by the Golden Eagles was definitely eye-opening. Cal State LA had a 20-3 advantage in shots and an 11-0 edge in corner kicks and put Chico State under duress for the entirety of the match. Cal State LA had a 13-2 edge in shots in the first half and then proceeded to allow only one more shot to the Wildcats in the second half.

The only goal of the match came in the 34th minute and came shortly after one of Cal State LA's many corner kicks. The ball was played back to Shelby Melin, who sent a ball into the box, where Kimberly Gamez headed it to Schrock. The sophomore got the ball in point-blank range and sent a shot inside the near post for her second goal of the season. Gamez picked up her first assist of the season.

Even with the lead, Cal State LA continued to pressure and never let Chico State get into the game.

Areli Reyes made two saves for the Golden Eagles' sixth shutout of the season. Emma Hofmann made seven saves for the Wildcats to keep them within striking distance throughout.

Schrock, Melin and Melody Landphear all had three shots for the Golden Eagles, while Kaelah Basurto and Lauren Sanchez had two shots each.

The 20 shots were a season high for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a road match at Cal State San Marcos before its next home game on Sunday, Oct. 9 against Cal State San Bernardino.
