Golden Eagles Pick Up A Big Non-Conference Win

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team got back on the winning track with a well-played 1-0 victory over Biola on Wednesday night.

Morgan Patea scored a spectacular goal in the 42nd minute and that was all the Golden Eagles needed in a big non-conference victory in University Stadium. Cal State LA (3-1-1) was coming off a tie against Simon Fraser, but came up with a much better defensive effort on Wednesday against the Eagles (1-4-1). The Golden Eagles had a 13-2 advantage in shots and didn't allow an attempt in the second half.

Areli Reyes was in net for the Golden Eagles and did an outstanding job managing the game, although she did not have to make a save to record her third shutout of the season.

Erin Schrock had a game-high three shots for the Golden Eagles, while Melody Landphear had a pair.

Patea broke a scoreless tie in the 42nd minute with a clever goal. Destiny Moedano sent a booming free kick toward the goal and Patea raced into the box, where she beat a Biola defender to the and then flicked a beautiful shot just inside the far post and just under the crossbar.

The perfectly-placed shot was the first career goal for Patea, who is in her second season with the program. She appeared in 17 games with two starts last season and was making her third appearance of the season on Wednesday after missing the team's first two games.

The assist was the first of the season for Moedano, who is playing for the first time since the 2019 season when she appeared in 12 games with four starts. She has worked her way into the starting lineup in 2022 and has started all five games this season.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with its final non-conference game against Point Loma at 4:30 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with Cal State LA's men's soccer team, which will face Cal Poly Pomona at 7 p.m.
