LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team put forth the effort, but didn't get the results against one of the top teams in the nation.
The Golden Eagles battled to generate some offense, but had their hands full against No. 7 Point Loma and fell to the Sea Lions, 2-0, Saturday in University Stadium. Cal State LA (3-2-1) suffered just its second shutout loss of the season, while Point Loma (4-0-2) remained unbeaten and looked very much like a team residing among the nation's top-10.
Cal State LA did an admirable job of defending for most of the game, but Point Loma struck for a pair of beautiful first-half goals to take control of the contest.Â
Point Loma had a 10-5 advantage in shots and took 11 corner kicks, which Cal State LA defended nicely and kept the Sea Lions from scoring on any set pieces.
The Sea Lions took a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute when a shot by Olivia Shaw hit the left post and the rebound went right to Alison Pepper, who promptly knocked it into the goal.Â
Then, nine minutes later, Alana Diaz made a nice centering pass into the box where a flying Zoe Crockett was able to re-direct it into the net for her third goal of the season.
The Golden Eagles had a good scoring chance early in the game when
Jaclyn Orozco headed a shot just over the crossbar and another by
Alice Hernandez that sailed over the crossbar.
Thaiz Hernandez had the only shot on goal for the Golden Eagles, but her bid in the 68th minute was saved by Point Loma goalkeeper Julia Pinnell.
Cal State LA played both its outstanding sophomore goalkeepers in this one.
Areli Reyes made one save in the first half and
Olivia Spanish made one save in the second half.
Cal State LA will return to action next Friday in the California Collegiate Athletic Association opener against Cal State Monterey Bay at 7 p.m.
