ROHNERT PARK -- Cal State LA's baseball team saw its four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series get off to a rough start at Sonoma State on Friday.
The Golden Eagles took an early 1-0 lead, but the Seawolves took advantage of a pair of Cal State LA errors in an eight-run fourth inning and went on to a 16-2 victory at Seawolf Diamond. Cal State LA (14-25, 9-20 CCAA) had nine hits, but Sonoma State (17-21, 14-15 CCAA) collected 13 hits and was the recipient of 10 walks and six hit batters. After scoring a run in the second inning, the Golden Eagles managed just one run the rest of the way, while the Seawolves scored 14 runs over their last five at bats.
Cal State LA got two hits each from the top three batters in the order -
Johnny Pacheco,
Wilem Drozdowski and
A.J. Salgado. Pacheco was 2-for-4 with a run scored, Drozdowski was 2-for-4 and Salgado was 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Yuji Sakane started for the Golden Eagles and allowed only single runs in the second and third innings. He couldn't get out of the fourth inning, though, as two errors contributed to eight runs, seven of them unearned. Deandre Carter went the next 3 2/3 innings and gave up four hits and four runs and
Josh Arm didn't allow a hit while allowing two runs in his one inning of work.
Cal State LA took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when
Drew Emmons led off with a double, took third on a single by
Gerardo Castaneda and scored on a double play grounder by
Thomas Chavez.
Sonoma State, though, tied the game in the bottom of the second, took a 2-1 lead in the third and broke the game open in the fourth.Â
Cal State LA scored its second run in the fifth. Pacheco smacked a one-out double, moved to third on a single by Drozdowski and scored on a single by Salgado.
Sonoma State got a strong start from Nick Roth, who allowed nine hits and two runs over seven innings. Hogan Weaver pitched two hitless innings to complete the win. Torreahno Sweet and Nick Simmons each had three hits and four RBI to lead the Seawolves.
The series will continue on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
