WALNUT -- Cal State LA's men's and women's track and field teams turned in a few outstanding performances on Friday and Saturday at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays.
Running against mostly Division I and top Division II competition, the Golden Eagles turned in a pair of season's best marks on Friday, just one day after hosting the Twilight Open.
Leading the way was
Leon Tafirenyika, who finished 28th overall in the 400 meters with a time of 47.24. That mark is an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark and improves upon his previous fastest time this season of 47.59. Tafirenyika has the fastest mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association this season.
Shingirai Hlanguyo, who set a provisional qualifying mark in the 100 on Thursday at the Twilight Open, followed that up with a 10.65 clocking while finishing 48th in the 100 on Friday at Mt. SAC.
Jesus Nichol II, who won the 800 meters at the Twilight Open on Thursday, set a new season's best in that event on Friday while finishing 42nd with a time of 1:52.82. He is closing in on the provisional qualifying standard of 1:51.64.
Cal State LA also set a new season's best in the 4x400 relay when
Clifton Johnson,
Donavan Williams, Hlanguyo and Tafirenyika finished ninth with a time of 3:16.18. That time is second in the CCAA and not too far off the provisional standard of 3:14.05.
Cal State LA also ran a "B" team in the relay and
Tyrel Mitchell, Nichol,
Michael Diaz and
Timothy Mates were 14th with a time of 3:28.32.
Mya Ferguson represented Cal State LA's women's team and finished 42nd in the 100 hurdles with a time of 14.50.
Cal State LA's men's 4x100 relay team of
Marquel Angelo, Hlanguyo, Johnson and Harris competed on Saturday and turned in a time of 41.46, edging Cal Poly Pomona, but not beating the season's best time of 40.93 recorded on Thursday at the Twilight Open.
