SEASIDE -- Cal State LA's baseball team was unable to salvage the finale of a tough four-game series at California Collegiate Athletic Association leader Cal State Monterey Bay.
The Golden Eagles managed only seven hits in the series finale and fell by a 12-1 count to the Otters Sunday at the Otter Sports Complex. Cal State LA (12-22, 7-17 CCAA) dropped all four games in the series to Cal State Monterey Bay (27-10, 22-6 CCAA), including an excruciating 12-inning defeat in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader.
Wilem Drozdowski,
Michael Rosales and
Noe Garcia had two hits each for the Golden Eagles.
Drew Emmons drove in the only run on a double-play grounder in the fourth inning that cut Cal State Monterey Bay's lead to 3-1, but the Otters responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning and never looked back.
Brady Miguel had four hits, scored three times and drove in two for the Otters, while Jacob Martin had three hits and drove in five. Joseph Standley pitched seven innings for the Otters and gave up six hits and one unearned run for the win. Colby Harrison finished up with one hit allowed over two innings.
Micah Hee got the start for the Golden Eagles and allowed five hits and two earned runs over three innings.
Christian Casados pitched the next four innings for the Golden Eagles, while
Gerardo Castaneda pitched the eighth.
The Golden Eagles fell behind, 3-0, after three innings, but put together a rally in the fourth.
A.J. Salgado reached on an error and
Will Picketts was hit by a pitch to start things. After Rosales bunted for a single, the Golden Eagles had the bases loaded with no one out. Standley, though, got two consecutive groundouts, one of which was a double-play as a run scored, to get out of the inning with a two-run lead.
The Otters then extended their lead to 8-1 in the bottom of the inning.
Cal State LA will return to action with the beginning of a four-game home series against Cal State East Bay on Thursday. With Easter on Sunday, the series will consist of a 6 p.m. game on Thursday, a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. on Friday and a single game on Saturday at 11 a.m.
