LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team was doing the splits once again Sunday as yet another series ended on a break-even note.
The Golden Eagles fell to Cal State Dominguez Hills, 8-2, Sunday at Reeder Field and settled for a California Collegiate Athletic Association series split with the Toros. Cal State LA (11-11, 6-6 CCAA) has now split all six of its series this season, including its first three in CCAA play.
Cal State Dominguez Hills (16-10, 11-5 CCAA) limited Cal State LA to just three hits on Sunday, two of them from
A.J. Salgado. Cal State LA scored single runs in the first two innings, but were blanked the rest of the way.
Scott Ogrin hit a two-run home run for the Toros, who collected 10 hits in the game. Ogrin, Pierson Loska, Alberto Luevano and Vincent Lemesvary had two hits each.
Colby Davis got the start for the Golden Eagles and gave up six hits and five runs over the first 2 2/3 innings.
Dylan Needham didn't allow an earned run over 3 2/3 innings and
Julien Garcia got two outs without allowing a run for the Golden Eagles.
Micah Hee finished up and allowed one hit and one run over two innings.
Giovanni Besio went four innings for the Toros and gave up three hits and two runs. Humberto Chiquito, Zachariah McCorvey and Carlos Bracamontes didn't allow a hit over the final five innings for the Toros.
Cal State LA tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first when
Hayden Luff drew a bases-loaded walk and the Golden Eagles had a great chance to score more when
Thomas Chavez lined a shot toward the right-centerfield gap. Cal State Dominguez Hills centerfielder Eric Smelko made the defensive play of the game, though, racing over to make a sliding catch for the third out of the inning. The play saved at least two runs and possibly three.
The Toros took a 3-1 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the second on a double-play grounder and a run-scoring single by Smelko.
Cal State LA cut the margin to 3-2 in the bottom of the second when Salgado doubled in a run. Once again, Cal State Dominguez Hills executed a big play on defense as Smelko quickly got to Salgado's hit, fired a throw in to Ogrin at shorstop and he threw a strike to get
Wilem Drozdowski at home plate with the potential tying run.
The Golden Eagles managed only a single from Luff in the third inning and the Toros added two runs in the third, two in the sixth and one in the ninth to account for the final margin.
Cal State LA will return to action next Friday with the opener of a four-game CCAA series at Cal State San Bernardino. Â
