Golden Eagles Fare Well On All-Conference Teams

ARCATA -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team had four players named to the All-California Collegiate Athletic Association Team announced on Tuesday by the conference office, including a major award winner for the second straight season.

Lily Buggs was named the CCAA Freshman of the Year in voting by the conference women's basketball head coaches, giving the Golden Eagles back-to-back winners of that award. Teammate Nicole Flennaugh was named the CCAA Freshman of the Year in 2019-20. Buggs is the third player in program history to earn the Freshman of the Year award, joining Flennaugh and Shanna Demus, who won it in the 2003-2004 season.

Both Buggs and Flennaugh earned first-team All-CCAA honors, while Jada Johnson earned All-CCAA second-team recognition and Anai Washington received All-CCAA honorable mention.

The Golden Eagles had the second-most first-team selections, only conference champion Cal State San Marcos had more with three. Dynnah Buckner, Akayla Hackson and Jordan Vasquez were first-team selections for the Cougars. Also earning first-team honors were Ally Bates of Cal Poly Pomona, Charity Gallegos of Chico State, Asia Jordan of Cal State Dominguez Hills, Madison Perry of Cal Poly Humboldt and Madison Schiller of Cal State East Bay.

Buggs is having a sensational first season for the Golden Eagles and is currently second on the team and fifth in the conference in scoring with a 14.3 points per game average. She is also second on the team and fifth in the conference in rebounding with 8.3 rebounds per game and seventh in the conference in free-throw shooting percentage (75 percent). She is third in made field goals (128) and fourth in made free throws (75). Buggs reached 20 points or more five times, including a conference-high 34 points in a win over Cal State San Bernardino that also included a season-high 19 rebounds.

Flennaugh, meanwhile, is having a terrific second season for the Golden Eagles after her strong freshman season in 2019-20. She leads the team and is fourth in the conference in scoring with a 15.6 points per game average. She also leads the conference and is No. 1 in the nation with 3.54 3-pointers made per game. Her total of 85 leads the conference and is No. 5 in the nation and is also No. 2 all-time in program history, eclipsing her total of 66 she made as a freshman.

Flennaugh broke her own program record with nine 3-pointers in a win at Cal State Monterey Bay as part of a 34-point performance that is her career high and ties Buggs for the conference high this season. She has reached double figures in scoring 19 times and has scored 20 or more points seven times.

Johnson, in her first season with the Golden Eagles, leads the conference in rebounding with 10.3 rebounds per game and she is also fourth on the team in scoring with 8.3 points per game. She has seven double-doubles and two games with 20 or more rebounds, including a season-high 21 at Azusa Pacific.

Washington, also in her first season with the program, is third on the team in scoring with 10.5 points per game and she is third in rebounding with 6.1 rebounds per game. She reached double figures in scoring 12 times, including a season-high 26 points against San Francisco State. She had three games with 20 points or more.

Akayla Hackson of Cal State San Marcos was named the conference's Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, while Jordan Vasquez of Cal State San Marcos was Newcomer of the Year. Buggs was the Freshman of the Year and Renee Jimenez was the Coach of the Year.

Cal State LA finished third in the CCAA this season with a 12-7 record and will face No. 6 Sonoma State in a first-round CCAA Tournament game on Thursday at noon at Cal Poly Humboldt.
