LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's
A.J. Salgado has been named the California Collegiate Athletic Association Baseball Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 14-20, the conference announced on Monday.
Salgado continued his torrid hitting to help the Golden Eagles earn a four-game split at Biola last week. Salgado, a freshman from Glendora High School, picked up nine more hits in the four games, including a 5-for-5 performance in the opener on Thursday. Salgado had four RBI in that game.
For the series, he hit .563 with nine hits in 16 at bats, including a double and a home run. He scored five runs and drove in five.
Salgado, after the five-hit game on Thursday, collected two hits in each of the next two games before seeing his season-long nine-game hitting streak snapped in the nightcap of Saturday's doubleheader. He did draw a walk in that game, though, and has reached base in all 10 games so far this season.
Salgado leads the CCAA in batting average (.550), slugging percentage (.900), hits (22) and runs batted in (13). He is also second in the conference in on-base percentage (.587).
Salgado is the first Cal State LA baseball player to earn conference weekly honors since 2019 when Adam Gordon got the award for the week of April 15-21.
Cal State LA will open CCAA play this week with the opener of a four-game home series against Stanislaus State beginning at 6 p.m.
