Golden Eagles Return Home With A Big CCAA Win

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team played its first conference home game of the season on Thursday and the Golden Eagles turned in a winning performance.

The Golden Eagles erased an early 9-4 deficit and raced to an 89-62 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay in University Gym. Cal State LA (4-3, 2-1 CCAA) opened up a 43-24 lead by halftime and kept double-digit leads the rest of the way.

Lily Buggs led three Golden Eagles in double figures with 22 points, six rebounds and four assists, while Nicole Flennaugh had 18 points, all of them coming via six 3-pointers. She also had a team-high six assists.

Mikayla Mabie had 19 points to lead the Otters (3-5, 0-4 CCAA), while Lauryn Pointer added 17 points.

Jada Johnson had 10 points and eight rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Nevaeh Asiasi had nine points and a pair of assists and Olivia Hodges had nine points and eight rebounds. Amaya Fuentes added eight points for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA shot 52.9 percent for the game (36-of-68) and made 8-of-20 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were also 9-of-11 from the free-throw line. Cal State Monterey Bay shot 30.3 percent for the game (20-of-66) and was 8-of-28 from 3-point range. The Otters were also 14-of-19 from the free-throw line.

Cal State LA had a huge 53-39 rebounding edge and committed 19 turnovers to 10 for the Otters.

The Otters started quickly and took a 9-4 lead after 3-pointers from Mabie, Gigi Israel and Pointer, but the Golden Eagles responded with a 12-0 run and took the lead for good. A jumper by Johnson, an offensive rebound and basket by Johnson and a layup by Buggs put the Golden Eagles ahead. The run continued with two consecutive three-point plays by Buggs to make it 16-9.

A 3-pointer by Flennaugh and an offensive rebound basket by Hodges made it 21-11 and a 3-pointer by Flennaugh pushed the lead to 24-11 before the Golden Eagles settled for a 24-14 lead after one quarter.

The Golden Eagles extended the lead to 19 points by halftime, 43-24, and led by as many as 23 points in the third period. A 3-pointer by Flennaugh and a basket Buggs gave the Golden Eagles their biggest advantage, 80-50, midway through the fourth quarter.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a 1 p.m. game against San Francisco State.
