LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team took care of its homecourt Saturday with a victory over visiting San Francisco State.
The Golden Eagles led for nearly the entire game and held off a determined Gator team, 76-65, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association victory in University Gym. Cal State LA (5-3, 3-1 CCAA) built a nine-point halftime lead and kept that advantage throughout the second half despite several challenges from San Francisco State (4-6, 1-4 CCAA).
Nevaeh Asiasi had her best game of the season with a game-high 19 points, eight rebounds and three assists, while
Lily Buggs had another double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Jolene Armendariz had 18 points to lead the Gators, while Mya Blake had 17 points and Muirae Gomez had a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double.
Nicole Flennaugh had nine points and four assists for the Golden Eagles, while
Raya Smith had nine points and three assists.
Yesenia Smith had seven points and three rebounds and
Jada Johnson had six oints and five rebounds.
Cal State LA shot 46.8 percent for the game (29-of-62) and was just 2-of-10 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 16-of-20 from the free-throw line. San Francisco State shot 32.2 percent (19-of-59) and was 7-of-27 from 3-point range. The Gators were 20-of-25 from the free-throw line.
Cal State LA had a 41-38 rebounding edge and committed 15 turnovers to 12 for San Francisco State.
The Golden Eagles scored the last five points of the first quarter on a 3-pointer by
Raya Smith and a layup by Smith to take a 15-12 lead after one period.
Cal State LA took 11-point leads in the second quarter, the final time after a Buggs jumper that made it 31-20 before setting for a 33-24 halftime lead.
The Golden Eagles led by at least seven points throughout the second half and took their biggest lead at 68-49 after an offensive rebound and basket by Johnson with 5:49 to go.
Cal State LA will return to action with a home game against Cal State San Marcos on Monday, Dec. 19 at 5:30 p.m.
