LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball put on a dazzling display of long-range shooting Thursday night in an important California Collegiate Athletic Association win over Cal State Monterey Bay.
The Golden Eagles made 13 successful 3-pointers in the first half and went on to an 82-65 win over the Otters in University Gym. Cal State LA (5-5, 2-2 CCAA) shot an incredible 72 percent from 3-point range while building a 49-26 halftime lead and never looked back. The Golden Eagles made 16 successful 3-pointers in the game.
Dominic Escobar had a game-high 19 points to lead four Golden Eagles in double figures.
Alexander Sokol and
Payton Moore had 17 points each.
Joe Wall had 16 points to lead Cal State Monterey Bay (2-5, 0-2 CCAA), while J.R. Schilling and Charles Johnston had 10 points each.
Shane Bell had 10 points and five assists in his return to the lineup, while
Deuce Walker and
Jaden Lazo had six points each.
Jared Pearre had seven rebounds and three blocks to go along with two points.
Cal State LA shot 51.9 percent for the game (27-of-52) and was 16-of-27 from 3-point range (59.3 percent). The Golden Eagles were also 12-of-14 from the free-throw line. Cal State Monterey Bay shot 43 percent for the game (25-of-58) and was 10-of-24 from 3-point range. The Otters were only 5-of-11 from the free-throw line.
The two teams each had 31 rebounds, while Cal State LA had 14 turnovers to 13 for the Otters.
After spotting the Otters a 5-0 lead, the Golden Eagles turned things around and took their first lead at 13-10 after a 3-pointer by Moore. After Wall tied it for the Otters with a 3-pointer, Escobar hit a 3-pointer to give the Golden Eagles the lead for good. Lazo, Sokol and Lazo again hit 3-pointers to give the Golden Eagles a 27-15 lead and, after seeing the lead trimmed to six points at 28-22, went on a 21-4 blitz to take a 23-point halftime lead.
Kaden Rasheed, Bell, Sokol and Escobar hit 3-pointers during the stretch.
Cal State LA built leads as large as 28 points in the second half, once at 65-37 after a pair of free throws by Escobar with 14 minutes to go and again at 75-47 after a layup by
Kyjuan Cannady.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a 3 p.m. game against San Francisco State.
