Golden Eagles Complete A Home Weekend Sweep

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team jumped out to a big first-half lead for the second straight game and completed a California Collegiate Athletic Sweep with a win over San Francisco State.

The Golden Eagles, who built a 23-point halftime lead in a win over Cal State Monterey Bay on Thursday, grabbed a 17-point lead over the Gators on Saturday in an 84-66 win. Cal State LA (6-5, 3-2 CCAA) won for the third time in four games and moved above the .500 mark for the first time this season. Cal State LA grabbed a 42-25 halftime lead with some outstanding defense on Saturday and then shot 58.3 percent in the second half to preserve the lead.

Dominic Escobar poured in a career-high 26 points to lead three Golden Eagles in double figures, while Alexander Sokol had 19 points and hit six-of-11 from 3-point range. Shane Bell had 12 oints and five rebounds.

Eche Okeke had 20 points to lead San Francisco State (4-6, 0-4 CCAA), while Jonah Roth had 12 points.

Payton Moore had eight points and eight rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Jared Pearre had nine rebounds and two blocks to go along with four points. Deuce Walker had seven points for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA shot 50 percent for the game (29-of-58) and was 13-of-28 from 3-point range, including 8-of-14 in the second half. The Golden Eagles were 13-of-20 from the free-throw line. San Francisco State shot 34.8 percent (24-of-69) and was 3-of-17 from 3-point range. The Gators were 15-of-18 from the free-throw line.

Cal State LA was out-rebounded, 43-37 and committed 16 turnovers to 14 for the Gators.

The Golden Eagles took a 3-0 lead on an early three-point play by Escobar and never relinquished it. A dunk by Pearre and a 3-pointer by Sokol quickly built the lead to 8-2 and the Golden Eagles broke the game open with a 27-11 run that extended a 15-14 lead to 42-25 by halftime.

Sokol and Escobar opened the second half with 3-pointers for the Golden Eagles and a basket by Escobar stretched the lead to 50-25 with 18 minutes to go. San Francisco State chipped away at the lead, but back-to-back 3-pointers from Bell and Sokol pushed the lead back to 25 points again, 71-46, with 7:43 left.

The Golden Eagles led by at least 13 points the rest of the way.

Cal State LA will return to action with an exhibition game at Pepperdine on Monday, Dec. 19.
