MALIBU -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team got in its final exhibition game of the 2022-23 season at Pepperdine on Monday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles, missing a pair of starters, fell to a sharp-shooting Pepperdine squad, 92-69, in Firestone Fieldhouse. The game counted as a regular-season game for Pepperdine (6-5), while it was the third of three exhibition games for Cal State LA (6-5). The Golden Eagles took a break from California Collegiate Athletic Association play and will carry a 3-2 conference record into a Jan. 1 meeting at Cal State San Marcos.
Alexander Sokol continued his outstanding play and had a team-high 20 points for the Golden Eagles. He was 5-of-8 from 3-point range and 5-of-7 from the free-throw line.
Shane Bell had 13 points and two assists and
Deuce Walker had 13 points, four rebounds and two assists.
Maxwell Lewis had 26 points, four rebounds and five assists for Pepperdine, which shot a sizzling 74 percent in the first half, including 72.7 percent from 3-point range where the Waves were 8-of-11.
Jared Pearre just missed a double-double for the Golden Eagles with eight points and a team-high nine rebounds and
Payton Moore had eight points and a team-high five assists.
Cal State LA shot 37.5 percent for the game (24-of-64) and was 11-of-34 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 10-of-15 from the free-throw line. Pepperdine shot 61 percent for the game (36-of-59) and was 11-of-21 from 3-point range. The Waves were also 9-of-16 from the free-throw line.
Pepperdine had a 43-23 rebounding edge and Cal State LA committed only 12 turnovers for 18 for Pepperdine.
Cal State LA will return to action on Jan. 1 with a road conference game at Cal State San Marcos beginning at 3 p.m.
