TURLOCK -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team got huge games from its two returning first-team All-California Collegiate Athletic Association stars on Saturday and picked up a big road victory as a result.
Nicole Flennaugh poured in 30 points and
Lily Buggs had 22 points, nine rebounds and eight steals to lead the Golden Eagles to an impressive 89-68 win over Stanislaus State in Fitzpatrick Arena. Cal State LA (3-3, 1-1 CCAA) picked up its first conference win and earned a split in its first conference weekend.
Flennaugh had a season-high with a shooting performance that fell just short of her own single-game program record of nine 3-pointers. Flennaugh was 8-of-13 from 3-point range. She achieved the third 30-point performance of her career and was just four points off her career best of 34 set last season. She also scored 30 points as a freshman at UC San Diego in the 2019-20 season.
Buggs, meanwhile, was one rebound shy of her fourth double-double in six games this season. She was one point shy of her season high and scored more than 20 points for the second time this season.
The dynamic duo combined to go 20-for-32 overall and 10-of-17 from 3-point range as helped the Golden Eagles to a season high in points.
Cal State LA, which erased all of a 29-point deficit before eventually falling at Chico State on Thursday, took the opposite approach on Saturday, racing out to a 27-13 lead after one quarter, a 49-31 edge by halftime and a 70-47 lead after three quarters. Cal State LA took control of the game with a 17-0 first-quarter run that turned an 11-10 deficit into a 27-11 lead.
Olivia Hodges had another strong outing for the Golden Eagles with nine points and six rebounds.
Makayla Rose led Stanislaus State (3-5, 0-3 CCAA) with 21 points and eight rebounds and Liliana Marques had 12 points and three steals.
Nevaeh Asiasi had eight points, one assist and two steals in 21 minutes in her second start of the season for the Golden Eagles, while
Silivia Fonongaloa had six points and six rebounds.
Cal State LA shot a season-high 56.9 percent for the game (33-of-58) and was 11-of-21 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were also 12-of-16 from the free-throw line. Stanislaus State, meanwhile, shot 36.8 percent (25-of-68) and was just 3-of-15 from 3-point range. The Warriors were alsoÂ
just 15-of-26 from the free-throw line.
The Golden Eagles had a 42-32 rebounding edge and committed 28 turnovers to 23 for the Warriors.
The Golden Eagles took over the game with their 17-0 first-quarter run. Hodges started the run with a layup to give the Golden Eagles a 12-11 lead. Flennaugh added two free throws, Fonongaloa scored in the paint, Flennaugh scored on an offensive rebound, Fonongaloa added another basket, Hodges and Buggs scored on layups,
Yesenia Smith hit a pair of free throws and
Ashley Orozco hit a free throw to give the Golden Eagles a 27-11 edge.
The Golden Eagles led by as many as 23 points in the second quarter after a Flennaugh 3-pointer made it 45-22 and they settled for a 49-31 halftime lead.
A 3-pointer by
Yesenia Smith boosted the lead to 26 points at 65-39 and a 3-pointer by Buggs to end the third quarter gave the Golden Eagles a 70-47 lead entering the fourth period. The Golden Eagles led by at least 18 points the rest of the way.
Cal State LA will return to action with a home game against Cal State Monterey Bay on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
