Golden Eagles Set For CCAA Semifinal Matchup

ROHNERT PARK -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team went through its final preparations on Thursday for its California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament semifinal meeting against Stanislaus State.

The No. 3 seed Golden Eagles will face the No. 2 seed Warriors on Friday at 2 p.m. at Seawolf Soccer Field on the campus of Sonoma State. The winner of that match will face the winner of the match between No. 1 seed Sonoma State and No. 4 seed Chico State in Sunday's championship match at 1 p.m. The winner of the CCAA Tournament will receive the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Cal State LA (9-3-6) reached the semifinal round after a 2-0 victory over No. 6 seed Cal Poly Pomona in a first-round match in Los Angeles on Sunday. The Golden Eagles got goals from Liliana Gonzalez and Morgan Patea and an outstanding defensive effort led by goalkeeper Areli Reyes, who made seven saves, including a stop on a penalty kick in the second half.

The Golden Eagles are making their ninth straight appearance in the tournament and their 13th overall. Cal State LA has reached the semifinals for the second straight season and is seeking its first trip to the championship match since 2016.

Cal State LA won tournament championships in 2014 and 2009.

The Golden Eagles and Warriors are meeting for the fourth time in tournament play and for the first time since 2015. Cal State LA is 1-2 in the three previous contests. The Golden Eagles beat the Warriors, 2-1, in double overtime in 2010, the Warriors returned the favor in 2013 with a 3-2 double overtime win in Turlock and the Warriors posted a 1-0 win over Cal State LA in a first-round match in Los Angeles in 2015.

Cal State LA and Stanislaus State are meeting for the second time this season. The Warriors claimed a 2-1 decision in Turlock on Oct. 21. Gisell Cruz gave the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute with assists from Jonnie Sanchez and Skylynn Rodriguez, but the Warriors got the game-tying goal in the 76th minute and what proved to be the game-winner in the 83rd minute on a penalty kick.

Cal State LA had a 15-8 advantage in shots and a 6-0 edge in corner kicks in the contest.

Cal State LA is seeking its first NCAA bid since 2019 when the Golden Eagles, as the No. 7 seed, upset No. 2 seed Sonoma State in a first-round match in Rohnert Park, 1-0. It was the first road NCAA playoff win in program history.
