Golden Eagles Battle To 2-2 Draw With Yotes

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team found itself locked in another tight California Collegiate Athletic Association contest Sunday at University Stadium.

The Golden Eagles and Cal State San Bernardino engaged in an entertaining battle that ended in a 2-2 tie and had both teams wondering what else they had to do to get the win. Cal State LA (8-1-3, 2-13 CCAA) and Cal State San Bernardino (4-3-5, 0-3-3 CCAA) each picked up a point in the conference race, but both came oh-so-close to taking three points that a conference victory nets. The teams combined to hit three posts in the final 15 minutes of the game and goalkeepers Alvaro Unanua of Cal State LA and Aiden Hanes of Cal State San Bernardino had to be on their games to keep the fast-paced game tied.

Cal State LA took a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute, only to see Cal State San Bernardino equalize just more than a minute later. The Yotes then scored in the opening minute of the second half, but the Golden Eagles equalized in the 66th minute to tie things up once again.

With both teams pushing for the game-winner, three shots came tantalizing close to a score.

Cal State San Bernardino had an 18-15 advantage in shots and Cal State LA had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Unanua made four saves for the Golden Eagles, including an incredible effort to tip a shot off the top of the crossbar to prevent an almost certain goal. Hanes made five saves for the Yotes.

Aiden Wait opened the scoring for the Golden Eagles in the 29th minute when he headed in a long throw-in from Jacob Chong. The goal was Wait's team-leading fifth of the season, while Chong picked up his third assist, which is tied for the team lead.

The Yotes, though, responded in the 30th minute when Brian Castillo headed in a pass from Eduardo Rodriguez for his first goal of the season.

Cal State San Bernardino then took a 2-1 lead in the opening minute of the second half when Nicklaus Sullivan shot from point-blank range to the far post with an assist from Castillo.

Cal State LA tied it at 2-2 when Oliver Diaz sent a ball into the box where Bryan Ortega fired a hard shot to the far post for his fourth goal of the season. Diaz picked up his third assist.

From that point on, the game featured an exciting back-and-forth with both teams generating chances. Cal State LA's Tommaso Belli, who scored twice in Cal State LA's 2-0 win over Cal State San Marcos on Friday, hit the post with a shot in the 76th minute and Cal State San Bernardino's Paul Iniguez had a shot go off the post less than a minute later. Castillo then had a shot go off the post in the 87th minute and Cal State LA had a corner kick in the final minute that didn't produce a goal.

Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a home game against Sonoma State at 7 p.m.
