No. 8 Golden Eagles Come Alive In The Second Half

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team put things together in the second half of an important California Collegiate Athletic Association victory over Sonoma State.

The Golden Eagles and Seawolves were locked in a 0-0 struggle in the big conference meeting, but Cal State LA exploded for three second-half goals to post a 3-0 win Friday night in University Stadium. Cal State LA (9-1-3, 3-1-3 CCAA) climbed into a tie for third place in the conference, three points out of second and five points out of first with four conference meetings remaining.

Carl Solli made a big impact in the second half for the Golden Eagles, drawing a penalty kick in the 51st minute that teammate Bryan Ortega cashed in for a goal and then scoring himself with a dynamite shot at the top of the box less than seven minutes later. Lucas Rosales completed the scoring in the 85th minute when he knocked in a rebound.

Cal State LA had a 12-8 advantage in shots, including a 10-5 edge in the second half. Each team had four corner kicks.

Alvaro Unanua was spectacular in goal once again for the Golden Eagles, making four saves, including a pair of dazzling deflections that kept the shutout in place.

Reiner ter Riet also had four saves for Sonoma State (5-6-3, 2-4-1 CCAA).

The first goal of the game came courtesy of a penalty kick by Ortega, who now shares the team lead with Aidan Wait with five. Solli, who entered the game at halftime and immediately jump-started Cal State LA's offense, drew the penalty kick when he was fouled close to Sonoma State's net.

Solli notched his first goal of the season with a beautiful strike from the top of the box after coming up with a loose ball in the 57th minute.

Rosales finished the scoring in the 85th minute on a goal set up by a tremendous shot by Anton Olofsson. The shot was saved, but the rebound came out and Rosales fired it inside the near post for his third goal of the season.

Rosales and Solli had three shots each for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday on Senior Day with the Golden Eagles honoring 10 team members before the scheduled 2 p.m. start against San Francisco State.
