LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team completed a six-point weekend with an impressive win over San Francisco State on Sunday.
The Golden Eagles struck early and kept on going in a 4-0 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory over the Gators in University Stadium. Cal State LA (10-1-3, 4-1-3 CCAA) moved into a tie for third with Cal State Monterey Bay, just three points back of co-leaders Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal Poly Pomona with three matches remaining.
Alex Rodriguez opened the scoring just 1:01 into the game and
Oliver Diaz scored the first of his two goals in the ninth minute. Diaz added his second goal in the 47th minute and
Tommaso Belli rounded out the scoring in the 86th minute.
Alvaro Unanua and
Julian Aadlandsvik combined for the shutout with each goalkeeper making one save.
Cal State LA had a 17-7 advantage in shots, while San Francisco State (3-7-4, 1-5-2 CCAA) had a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
Rodriguez opened the scoring with his fourth goal of the season. It was set up by
Daniel Garcia, who sent a long ball toward the box. Rodriguez was able to get there a fraction ahead of San Francisco State's goalkeeper and was able to flick a shot into the empty net.
Diaz made it 2-0 in the ninth minute after receiving a pass from
Bryan Ortega and rifling a ball off a San Francisco State defender and into the goal.
Diaz scored his second goal early in the second half.
Andrew Portis started the play with a pass to
Carl Solli, who sent a nice ball into Diaz in the box for a shot from close-range. Diaz now has four goals on the season, while Portis picked up his first assist and Solli picked up his third.
Belli finished the scoring with a spectacular bicycle kick in the box.
Lucas Rosales started the play with a pass to
Anton Olofsson. Olofsson's pass high in the air off a defender and Belli drove it into the goal for his third goal of the season.
Cal State LA will play its final three conference matches on the road, beginning with a game at Stanislaus on Friday.
