LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team got to experience an exhibition game in the Galen Center Sunday against Pac-12 opponent USC.
The Golden Eagles competed admirably in an 87-48 defeat to the Trojans. Cal State LA opened the scoring in the game and trailed by only eight points after one quarter. The Trojans, though, built their leads in each quarter, including a 22-8 margin in the fourth period.
Nicole Flennaugh and
Raya Smith scored 10 points each for the Golden Eagles, while
Jada Johnson had eight points and two rebounds.
Kadi Sissoko had 25 points and 10 rebounds for the Trojans, while Rayah Marshall had 21 points and 15 rebounds. The USC starters accounted for 71 of the team's 87 points.
Lily Buggs had six points, six rebounds, two assists and six steals for the Golden Eagles, while
Yesenia Smith had five points, three rebounds and two assists.
Cal State LA had difficulty against USC's defense and shot just 27.7 percent for the game (18-of-65), including 14.3 percent from 3-point range (3-of-21). USC also had a 61-28 rebounding edge. Cal State LA had fewer turnovers (15 to 16) and more steals (11-10) than USC.
Flennaugh scored the opening basket of the game to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead, but the Trojans scored the next 10 points and were off and running. The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as 13 points in the opeig quarter, but a 3-pointer by Flennaugh, a free throw by
Yesenia Smith and another 3-pointer by Flennaugh cut the margin to 20-12 after one quarter.
A 3-pointer by
Raya Smith cut the deficit to 26-19 midway through the second quarter, but USC ended the half on a 15-6 run to open up a 41-25 halftime lead.
Cal State LA will continue its tough exhibition schedule with a game at the University of Arizona on Wednesday, Nov. 2 at 6 p.m.
