Golden Eagles Clinch Tourney Spot With Wild Win

HAYWARD -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team punched its ticket to the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament with a wild win Sunday at Cal State East Bay.

The Golden Eagles saw a 3-0 second-half lead disappear in stunning fashion, but Liliana Gonzalez saved the day with a spectacular goal in the 87th minute to lift Cal State LA to a 4-3 win in Pioneer Stadium. Cal State LA (8-3-5, 5-1-4 CCAA) clinched a spot in the CCAA Tournament for a ninth straight season and took over sole possession of third place in the conference with 19 points, just one point behind co-leaders Stanislaus State and Sonoma State with one match remaining.

Sonoma State, Stanislaus State, Cal State LA and Chico State have all clinched spots in the six-team tournament. The Golden Eagles can finish anywhere from first to a three-way tie for fourth. The top two teams receive first-round byes in the tournament, while the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds will host the No. 6 and No. 5 seeds in first-round matches next Sunday.

The result against Cal State East Bay came in an unexpected fashion as the Golden Eagles allowed a season-high three goals in the contest, all in a 22-minute span, but countered that with a season-high four goals, two in each half.

Thaiz Hernandez, Alice Hernandez, Melody Landphear and Liliana Gonzalez scored the Cal State LA goals.

Cal State LA had a 15-9 advantage in shots, holding a 5-3 edge in the first half and a a 10-6 edge in the second half. The Golden Eagles also had a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks, including a 6-1 edge in the second half. Cal State LA was effective on set pieces, scoring two of its goals off free kicks.

Thaiz Hernandez opened the scoring in the 15th minute with a blast off a free kick from about 10 yards inside of midfield. Head coach Erik Garcia called out for Hernandez to take the long kick and she rewarded his decision with a remarkable goal, her third of the season.

The Golden Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the 37th minute on another scoring play that was a result of a free kick. Kaelah Basurto sent a free kick into the box, where Kimberly Gamez headed it off the near post. Alice Hernandez got to the rebound, right in front of the net, and promptly kicked it in for her first goal of the season. Gamez picked up her second assist of the year.

Cal State LA got off to a strong start in the second half and made it 3-0 in the 51st minute on a beautiful goal by Landphear, who received a pass from Erin Schrock and drilled a shot just under the crossbar and just inside the far post. It was her second goal of the season, while Schrock picked up her first assist.

Cal State East Bay, though, struck for three goals in 22 minutes to tie it. Mika Sayfurahman scored on a penalty kick in the 56th minute to get the rally started, Morgan Pearson made it 3-2 with a goal in the 63rd minute and Yvette Moreno tied it in the 78th minute.

Liliana Gonzalez, though, got the game-winner on an unbelievable individual play. She got the ball at the top of the box and dribbled quickly to her left to get closer to the goal. She was able to deke a defender, avoid a second defender and flick a shot from a sharp angle that found its way inside the far post with less than three minutes left.

Areli Reyes made one save for the Golden Eagles, while Shelby Melin, Landphear and Miyah Coleman had three shots each.

Cal State LA will conclude the regular season with a road game at Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday at 11:30 a.m.
