Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Golden Eagles Tie Broncos To Finish Third In CCAA

POMONA -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team needed a win and some help to claim its first California Collegiate Athletic Association regular-season championship since 2014 and the Golden Eagles got neither despite another strong performance on Thursday.

The Golden Eagles battled to a 0-0 tie with Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday in the regular-season finale at Kellogg Stadium to finish third in the conference behind co-champions Sonoma State and Stanislaus State, who both won their games on Thursday, which essentially left the Golden Eagles out of the title picture no matter their result against the Broncos. Cal State LA (8-3-6, 5-1-5 CCAA) finished with 20 points, three points out of first, and earned a first-round home match on Sunday in University Stadium. The Golden Eagles will be familiar with the opponent since they will face No. 6 seed Cal Poly Pomona (6-8-3, 5-4-2 CCAA) at 11:30 a.m. The winner will advance to the conference semifinals to face No. 2 seed Stanislaus State next Friday at Sonoma State.

The game Thursday with Cal Poly Pomona was a competitive battle throughout with Cal State LA starting quickly and have the better chances in the first half and the Broncos coming through with some good chances in the latter stages of the second half. Cal State LA had a 10-9 edge in shots, including a 5-1 advantage in the first half. Cal Poly Pomona had a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks, including a 3-1 edge in the second half.

Areli Reyes was not credited with a save in the match, although she appeared to at least get a piece of a shot by Cal Poly Pomona's Julia Lucero that was tipped off the crossbar and out of danger.

Cal State LA's best chances came in the first half. Lauren Sanchez had two good shots in the opening half, while Melody Landphear had a shot in the 23rd minute deflected off the crossbar.

More scoring chances, though, were hard to come by against two of the top defenses in the conference.

Sanchez and Landphear each had two shots for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA will now face Cal Poly Pomona again in three days, Sunday at 11:30 a.m., at University Stadium. This will be the third meeting of the season. Cal State LA took the first meeting in the season opener, 1-0, at University Stadium.
