LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team made sure an electric start held up Sunday in the opening round of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament.
The Golden Eagles scored twice in a three-minute span of the first half and
Areli Reyes made a sensational stop of a penalty kick in the second to preserve a 2-0 shutout win over Cal Poly Pomona. No. 3 seed Cal State LA (9-3-6) recorded its 11th shutout of the season with Reyes playing a starring role on Sunday. She made seven saves in all, including a pair of sensational diving deflections during a strong second-half push from No. 6 seed Cal Poly Pomona (6-9-3).
Liliana Gonzalez continued her outstanding play down the stretch, opening the scoring with her sixth goal of the season in the 12th minute and then heading a shot off the crossbar that
Morgan Patea headed into the goal in the 14th minute to make it 2-0. Gonzalez has a team-leading six goals on the season with five of those goals coming in the last six games. The six goals are sixth in the conference.
Her assist on Sunday was her second of the season and she now has 14 points, which is ninth in the conference.
She now has five game-winning goals, which leads the conference.
Patea notched her second goal of the season when she was first to a rebound of a Gonzalez shot off the crossbar and sent into the goal.Â
Cal State LA had a 13-12 edge in shot, including a 12-4 advantage in the first half. The Golden Eagles also had a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Golden Eagles got off to a flying start and very nearly scored in the 10th minute when a shot by
Destiny Moedano went off the crossbar.
Less than two minutes later, the Golden Eagles took the lead.
Shelby Melin started the play with a strong run and a pass to Patea, who crossed the ball into the box. Gonzalez took it from there, heading it in just under the crossbar for the goal.
Patea and Gonzalez were at it again just 2:22 later when a Patea finished a shot off the crossbar by Gonzalez.
Cal Poly Pomona made a determined comeback effort in the second half and Cal State LA needed several strong defensive plays to preserve the shutout. The biggest was a sensational diving stop by Reyes of a penalty kick by Tara Oper in the 80th minute.Â
There was also a brilliant save off the line by
Miyah Coleman in the 51st minute on a bid by Julia Lucero that kept the Broncos from making it 2-1 early in the second half. Reyes made two diving deflections on shots by Bridget Carbonneau in the 60th minute and by Jaclyn Cuevas in the 82nd minute.
Gonzalez and Patea each had three shots for the Golden Eagles, while Melin had two.
Cal State LA advances to the conference semifinals for the second straight season and for the 10th time in program history. The Golden Eagles will face No. 2 seed Stanislaus State on Friday at 2 p.m. at Sonoma State with the winner advancing to the championship match next Sunday at 1 p.m.
