ROHNERT PARK -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team turned in a fantastic performance on Friday and earned a spot in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament championship match for the first time since 2016.
The No. 3 seed Golden Eagles were sensational in a 1-0 win over CCAA regular-season co-champion and No. 2 seed Stanislaus State in a semifinal match at Seawolf Soccer Field. Cal State LA (10-3-6) took over the game in the second half and were rewarded with a brilliant goal by
Kaelah Basurto in the 68th minute that was the game-winner. The Golden Eagles had a 12-1 advantage in shots in the second half and the majority of the final 45 minutes were played in Stanislaus State's end of the field.
The Golden Eagles were able to avenge an earlier 2-1 loss to Stanislaus State that was Cal State LA's only conference defeat.
Cal State LA will now face tournament host and No. 1 seed Sonoma State on Sunday at 1 p.m. in search of the program's first tournament title since 2014. The winner Sunday will also earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The goal by Basurto was started by a pass from
Melody Landphear that Basurto controlled on the left side of the field. She took a touch and went to the inside of a Stanislaus State defender and then ripped a right-footed shot from outside the box toward the far post, just under the crossbar, and into the goal. Landphear picked up her first assist of the season.
It was an unstoppable shot and Basurto's first goal of the season and the second of her Cal State LA career. Her first goal, ironically, was against Stanislaus State in 2021.
Areli Reyes made one save for the shutout and did a masterful job of settling things down when Stanislaus State did generate some pressure. She made a nice stop on a deflection right in front of the goal in the latter stages of the match. Cal State LA recorded its 12th shutout of the season.
After a scoreless first half that saw each team generate five shots, the Golden Eagles played one of their best halves of the season in the second 45 minutes. Cal State LA applied relentless pressure and Stanislaus State goalkeeper Alexia Estrada made seven of her eight saves in the second half to keep her team within striking distance.
Shelby Melin had a match-high four shots for the Golden Eagles, while
Liliana Gonzalez and
Thaiz Hernandez had two shots each.
Cal State LA will face No. 1 seed Sonoma State in the championship game on Sunday. The host Seawolves rallied from a 1-0 deficit in overtime to record a 2-1 win over No. 4 seed Chico State in the other semifinal on Friday.
