LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team turned in another magnificent performance Saturday to complete its first weekly sweep of the season.
The Golden Eagles got a season-high 21 points from
Dominic Escobar, 17 of them in the second half, and beat San Francisco State, 87-72, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest in University Gym. Cal State LA (6-9, 3-6 CCAA) has won three straight games, although it took the Golden Eagles more than three weeks to get there. Cal State LA (6-9, 3-6 CCAA) had five games canceled due to COVID protocols before returning from a three-week absence to beat Cal State Monterey Bay on Thursday.
Escobar led four Golden Eagles in double figures.
Alexander Sokol had 17 points and knocked down five more 3-pointers,
Adrease Jackson had 15 points, including a big 3-pointers and five big free throws late, and
Lyrik Shreiner had 13 points. Cal State LA played a good majority of the second half with three freshmen - Escobar,
Shane Bell and
Kyjuan Cannady -- on the court and the newcomers had clutch performances. Bell had six points, while Cannady had three points and five assists.Â
Toby Okwuokei led three Gators (8-11, 5-7 CCAA) in double figures with 17 points, while Sean Orr had 13 points and Eche Okeke had 12 points.
Elisha Duplechan had seven points and three assists for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA was sensational once again on offense and shot 58 percent (29-of-50) for the game and knocked down 12-of-23 from 3-point range (52 percent). The Golden Eagles also made 17-of-21 from the free-throw line, including 12-of-14 in the second half.
San Francisco State shot 37.7 percent (23-of-61) and was 8-of-25 (32 percent) from 3-point range. The Gators were 18-of-27 from the free-throw line.
The Golden Eagles trailed briefly early in the game, but took command in the first half. A 3-pointer by Cannady gave the Golden Eagles their first double-digit lead at 25-15 and Cal State LA led by as many as 16 points in the first half before settling for a 43-31 halftime lead.
The Golden Eagles saw the lead sliced to five points and had a pair of starters go down before righting the ship. After the Gators cut the margin to 47-42, the Golden Eagles went on a 9-0 run to boost the lead to 14. Bell started the run with a layup, Escobar hit a pair of free throws, Bell made another layup and Escobar hit a 3-pointer to make it 56-42 with 12:29 to go. Cal State LA led by double-digit margins the rest of the way and built its biggest lead at 84-65 with two minutes left after a pair of free throws by Sokol.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a road game at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Â
