Golden Eagles Get On The Board Against Broncos

POMONA -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team put an end to its frustrating scoreless streak on Saturday in a non-conference game at Cal Poly Pomona, but the Golden Eagles were unable to come away with a win.

The Golden Eagles struck for two goals for the first time this season, but surrendered a season-high four goals in a 4-2 loss to the Broncos at Kellogg Stadium. The match was the final non-conference match for both teams, who will meet again in the California Collegiate Athletic Association regular-season finale in early November.

Cal State LA (0-5-1) was out-shot by Cal Poly Pomona (3-2), 15-7, and was on the short end of a 6-2 count on corner kicks. The Golden Eagles fell behind, 2-0 and 3-1 in the first half, closed to within 3-2 in the 70th minute and then gave up the final goal in the 84th minute.

Two Golden Eagle freshmen scored the first goals of their Cal State LA careers in the contest. Liliana Gonzalez, who has generated some outstanding scoring chances earlier in the season, struck for the Golden Eagles in the 31st minute to make it 2-1 and Shelby Melin converted a penalty kick - the first of the season for the Golden Eagles - in the 70th minute.

Cal State LA's freshman goalkeepers - Olivia Spanish and Areli Reyes - both played a half for the Golden Eagles and each made three saves.

Erin Schrock, Irma Pinzon and Diana Millan had shots on goal for Cal State LA.

The Golden Eagles fell behind, 2-0, in the first 29 minutes after goals by Cal Poly Pomona's Elise Garcia and Taylor Scott, but Gonzalez didn't take long to get them back in it. She notched her first goal of the season just two minutes after Scott's goal to cut the deficit in half.

The Broncos got a goal from Gillian Ortin in the 41st minute to take a 3-1 halftime lead.

Once again, the Golden Eagles fought back and Melin knocked in a penalty kick to make it 3-2 with 20 minutes still remaining in regulation. Scott's second goal of the game in the 84th minute completed the scoring.

The Golden Eagles will open CCAA play next Friday with a road game at San Francisco State.
