Golden Eagles Struggle In Loss At Concordia

IRVINE -- Cal State LA's young men's basketball team had a rough evening Saturday night at Concordia on the second day of the CCAA/PacWest Challenge.

The Golden Eagles were unable to make up a huge disparity from 3-point range and fell to host Concordia, 114-80, at CU Arena. Cal State LA (0-2) fell to PacWest programs Biola and Concordia in the two-day tournament.

Freshman Dominic Escobar was a bright spot for the Golden Eagles, pouring in a team-high 20 points leading four players in double figures. Adrease Jackson had an 18-point, 10-rebound double-double, Alexander Sokol had 12 points and five rebounds and Elisha Duplechan had 11 points.

Wayne Arnold had 32 points to lead four Concordia players in double figures. Kobe Sanders had 19 points.

Ben Uloko had eight points and five rebounds for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA shot 44.6 percent for the game, including 50 percent in the second half, but made only 2-of-9 attempts from 3-point range. Concordia (1-1), on the other hand, shot 51.4 percent for the game (38-of-74), including a robust 41.9 percent from 3-point range, where they made 18 of 43 attempts. Cal State LA was effective getting to the free throw line, but the Golden Eagles were just 28-of-42 (66.7 percent) from the line, while Concordia was 20-of-26. Cal State LA had a 39-35 rebounding edge, but also committed 20 turnovers to just 13 for Concordia. The hosts had a 36-12 edge in points off of turnovers.

Cal State LA scored the opening points of the game on an offensive rebound and basket by Uloko and a layup by Duplechan put the Golden Eagles ahead, 4-3, but Concordia scored the next seven points to take the lead for good. A 16-0 run put the Eagles ahead, 22-6, before a 3-pointer by Sokol stopped the streak.

Concordia expanded its lead to 60-34 by halftime.

A layup by Duplechan got the Golden Eagles to within 19 points at 84-65 with 8:44 to go, but that's as close as they would get.

Cal State LA will play its home opener on Monday against Simon Fraser at 7 p.m.
