BERKELEY -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team put forth a spirited effort in its second exhibition game against NCAA Division I competition Monday night.
The Golden Eagles battled with Cal in a 92-58 loss in Haas Pavilion. Cal State LA is featuring an almost entirely new roster this season with only one player returning who saw playing time for the Golden Eagles in 2019-20. That returner,
Sean Estes, hit a 3-pointer for the second straight game.
Adrease Jackson led the Golden Eagles in scoring for the second straight game with 13 points, while
Wesley Harris Jr. had 11 points. Freshman
Kyjuan Cannady had nine points and four assists, while
Alexander Sokol also had nine points.
Grant Anticevich had 23 points to lead Cal.
Cal State LA shot 45.7 percent from the floor (21-of-46), while Cal hit 62.1 percent of its shots (36-of-58). The Golden Eagles were 6-of-18 from 3-point range and made 10-of-15 from the free-throw line. Cal State LA battled on the boards, trailing by just a 28-26 count, but committed 27 turnovers to 15 for the Bears.
Estes opened the game with a 3-pointer to give the Golden Eagles a 3-0 lead and a basket by Jackson tied it for the last time at 5-5. Cal scored 11 straight points to take the lead before a 3-pointer by Jackson stopped the run. Cal State LA trailed 49-29 at halftime.
Cal State LA will play its final exhibition game on Wednesday at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
