LOS ANGELES -- With its conference tournament hopes flickering, Cal State LA's women's soccer team kicked things into gear in the second half to claim a big California Collegiate Athletic Association victory on Sunday.
The Golden Eagles, limited to just one shot by a stifling Humboldt State defense in the first half, erupted for 16 shots in the final minute and picked up an important 1-0 victory at University Stadium. Cal State LA (5-9-2, 5-4-1 CCAA) took advantage of ties on Sunday by Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal Poly Pomona and a loss by Stanislaus State to jump into fifth place in the CCAA with one game remaining.
Melody Landphear scored her first goal of the season in the 61st minute to account for the only scoring in the game.
Irma Pinzon made a spectacular individual effort, making a beautiful pass right before colliding with a defender. Landphear was able to collect it in stride, dribble into the box, and fire a shot that tucked nicely just inside the far post.
After a sluggish first half that saw the teams combine for just four shots, the teams began trading chances in the second half and only some outstanding goalkeeping kept the score at 1-0.
Cal State LA finished the game with a 17-9 advantage in shots, while Humboldt State had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
Olivia Spanish made one save for the Golden Eagles in the first half, while
Areli Reyes made two saves in the second half, including a diving stop on a shot by Baylee Groom that seemed destined to sneak inside the post.
Humboldt State goalkeeper Marisol Camargo made eight saves, including seven in the second half. One of her saves came on a penalty kick attempt in the 79th minute. She also made sensational back-to-back stops in the 74th minute that kept her team in it. First, she made a brilliant stop on a point-blank attempt by
Giselle Alvarado and then denied
Vivian Viramontes on a rebound try right in front. The Golden Eagles earned a corner kick after all of that and
Jaclyn Orozco got another attempt, but her shot was also stopped by Camargo.
Viramontes was a dangerous threat in her 29 minutes of playing time, firing off a match-high five shots, including a flick from right in front of the net that just went over the crossbar in the second half.
Miyah Coleman,
Erin Schrock and
Shelby Melin had two shots each for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA honored eight student-athletes --
Bryanna Avina,
Leslie Jimenez,
Giselle Alvarado,
Yailene Lemus,
Natalie Reynoso,
Miyah Coleman,
Faith Baumgartner and
Irma Pinzon - on Senior Day in pregame ceremonies.
Cal State LA will conclude the regular season on Thursday with a home game against Cal Poly Pomona at 2 p.m. The winner will clinch a spot in the CCAA Tournament.
