ROHNERT PARK -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team didn't get a win Sunday against conference-leading Sonoma State, but the young Golden Eagles turned in an encouraging performance nonetheless.

The Golden Eagles allowed a first-half goal on an unfortunate bounce and that was it in a hard-fought 1-0 California Collegiate Athletic Association loss to Sonoma State at Seawolf Soccer Field. Cal State LA (0-6-2, 0-1-1) played evenly with the Seawolves as both teams ended the contest with nine shots and five shots on goal.

Irma Pinzon had two shots, including one on goal, while Miyah Coleman also added two shots. Heather Matterson, Mary-Beth White-Bothe and Gisell Cruz also had shots on goal for the Golden Eagles.

Areli Reyes played the first half in goal for the Golden Eagles and made two saves, while Olivia Spanish played the second half for the Golden Eagles also made two saves.

Emily Masurky made five saves for Sonoma State (7-1, 2-0 CCAA).

Malva Falk scored the game's only goal in the 16th minute. Renee Kenter lofted a high shot from outside the box and Areli was able to jump up and deflect the ball. It appeared to glance off the crossbar and right to Falk, who was right in front of the goal and knocked in the rebound.

The meeting between the two programs was the first since Cal State LA's NCAA playoff victory over Sonoma State in Rohnert Park on Nov. 22, 2019. The Golden Eagles scored a late goal to post a 1-0 victory and record the program's first-ever NCAA road victory.

Cal State LA will return to action next Friday with a home game against Cal State East Bay.
