Golden Eagles Earn A Draw At Windy CS Monterey Bay

SEASIDE -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team kept its lengthy conference unbeaten streak alive Sunday with a hard-earning draw at Cal State Monterey Bay.

The Golden Eagles got a goal late in the second half from Lucas Rosales and battled to a 1-1 tie with Cal State Monterey Bay in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest at the Otter Sports Complex. No. 8 Cal State LA (9-2-2, 7-0-1 CCAA), which has already clinched a spot in the CCAA Tournament for a 10th straight season, remains in first place in the conference with three matches remaining.

The Golden Eagles extended their conference unbeaten streak to 22 games in a row, dating back to 2018, but did see their impressive 13-game conference win streak come to an end. That streak began after a 1-1 draw at Cal State San Bernardino on Oct. 17, 2019.

The Golden Eagles and Otters played in some heavy winds that blew throughout the entire game. Cal State LA played into the winds in the first half and first overtime period and with the winds in the second half and second OT.

Cal State Monterey Bay (6-3-5, 2-3-3 CCAA) had a 13-7 advantage in shots and an 8-6 edge in corner kicks.

Cal State LA entered the game with six consecutive shutouts, but surrendered just its second goal of the season in the 30th minute. Antonio Ordonez did the scoring honors for the Otters with an assist from Pedro Hernandez.

The Golden Eagles, though, scored on a nifty sequence in the 44th minute to tie the game. Aiden Wait started the scoring play with a slick pass to Daniel Yu, who crossed the ball into the box where Rosales one-timed it into the net for his third goal of the season. Rosales now shares the team lead in goals scored with Anton Olofsson and Morten Bjoershol. Wait picked up his team-leading fourth assist of the season, while Yu picked up his third.

Cal State LA goalkeeper Alvaro Unanua had another sensational game, matching a season-high with six saves, including a big deflection of a dangerous shot in the first overtime period. Unanua was able to punch a shot from Francisco Ponce over the crossbar for a corner kick.

Playing with the win in the second overtime, the Golden Eagles were able to maintain more possession in the Otter end. David Elizaga had a sequence of moves to elude defenders and sent in a cross to Eddie Leon for a shot inside the box that went over the crossbar.

Cal State LA will play its final three conference games at home, beginning with a match against Chico State on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
