LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team got a spectacular late-game rally to keep its spot atop the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
The No. 8 Golden Eagles scored two goals in the final 11 minutes to erase a 2-1 deficit and edge Chico State, 3-2, Friday night at University Stadium. Cal State LA (10-2-2, 8-0-1 CCAA) stretched its conference unbeaten streak to 23 games dating back to 2018 and maintained a two-point lead over Cal Poly Pomona with two conference matches remaining. Cal State LA also clinched its 10th consecutive 10-win season.
The Golden Eagles faced a stern challenge from Chico State (5-10, 4-5 CCAA), which is battling for a spot in the six-team conference tournament. The Wildcats stunned the Golden Eagles with goals in the 38th and 65th minutes to take a 2-1 lead.Â
Cal State LA's response was a game-tying goal from
Gonzalo Talavera in the 80th minute and the game-winner from a sliding
Carl Solli with just 23 seconds remaining.
David Elizaga tied a program record with three assists in the game.
Cal State LA had a 13-7 advantage in shots and a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.Â
Alvaro Unanua made a pair of saves to post his 10th win of the season, while Chico State goalkeeper Luis Albarran made five saves.
The Golden Eagles took an early lead on a beautiful goal by
Morten Bjoershol. Elizaga sent in a free kick toward the far post, where Bjoershol leaped up and headed the ball into the goal. It was Bjoershol's team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Cal State LA continued to control the game with solid possession, but the Wildcats struck quickly in the 38th minute to tie it. A throw-in into the box was cleared by the Golden Eagles, but it went right to Chico State's Kristoffer Brown, who one-timed a hard shot from the top of the box and in to make it 1-1.
Chico State took the lead in the 65th minute on another play where Cal State LA was unable to clear a ball out of harm's way. The cross eventually got to Cooper Renteria, who fired into the goal to make it 2-1.
Cal State LA tied it in the 80th minute thanks to another free kick by Elizaga. This one was headed in by
Gonzalo Talavera for his second goal of the season.
The Golden Eagles then won it in dramatic fashion with Elizaga once again in the middle of it.
Jose Orellana flicked a pass to Elizaga, who dribbled in toward the goal and sent a ball right in front of the net, where Solli slid past a defender and knocked it into the net for his first goal of the season.
Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday with a game against Humboldt State on Senior Day. The Golden Eagles will honor eight seniors in pregame ceremonies.
