SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team stretched its winning streak to three following a tight 1-0 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory at Cal State San Bernardino.
Faith Baumgartner converted on a first-half penalty kick for her first career goal for the lone score of the game. Cal State LA (3-7-2, 3-2-1 CCAA) has climbed into a tie for fifth place in the CCAA, just one point out of fourth and three points out of second. The top six teams will qualify for the CCAA Tournament. The Golden Eagles have only allowed one goal during their three-game winning streak.
The result on Sunday avenged an early-season non-conference loss to Cal State San Bernardino, also by a 1-0 score.
Cal State LA had an 8-6 advantage in shots for the game, including a 4-3 edge in the first half. Cal State San Bernardino (2-9-1, 0-5-1 CCAA) had a 2-1 edge in corner kicks.
The key moment of the game came late in the first half with the Golden Eagles doing a tremendous job of controlling the ball in the Coyote end.
Irma Pinzon was ready to give the Golden Eagles the lead when she got to a ball that got away from Cal State San Bernardino goalkeeper Carly Luna. As Pinzon got behind Luna, she was dragged down by the leg and the foul was called.
Baumgartner took the penalty try and made it nicely in the 31st minute for the only goal of the game.
Cal State LA's talented freshman goalkeeping tandem of
Areli Reyes and
Olivia Spanish combined for a shutout for the second straight game. Reyes started and made three saves in the first half, while Spanish made two saves in the second half to complete the win.
Baumgartner had two shots for the Golden Eagles, both of them on goal.
Erin Schrock and
Shelby Melin also had shots on goal for the Golden Eagles.
Miyah Coleman,
Jaclyn Orozco and Vivien Viramontes also had shots.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a road match at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
