Golden Eagles Earn First Two All-CCAA Awards

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's golf team made some program history on Wednesday when the California Collegiate Athletic Association announced the All-CCAA Women's Golf Team on Wednesday.

Marie Dean earned first-team All-CCAA honors and Morgan Sjoerdsma received honorable mention to become the first two golfers in program history to earn All-CCAA recognition. The teams were selected by the conference's women's golf head coaches.

The Golden Eagles had shown incredible improvement in their third year of competition before the 2019-20 season was cut short. Cal State LA finished ahead of other CCAA schools for the first time and was priming to be serious contenders when the CCAA Championships were canceled. Cal State LA had its best-ever finish while taking third at Point Loma's Sea Lion Invitational and top-10 finishes in its other two spring competitions.

Dean, in her first year with the program, was one of the top newcomers in the conference and Cal State LA's No. 1 golfer for much of the season. She had a pair of top-five finishes in the spring, including a tie for fifth at Cal State San Marcos' Fujikura Invitational in March against some of the best golfers in the region. She also had a fourth-place finish at Point Loma's Sea Lion Invitational. In six spring rounds, she shot 74 three times and 75 once and had a low 36-hole score of 149.

Sjoerdsma, also in her first season with the program, quickly established herself as one of the top freshmen in the conference. She had a pair of top-10 finishes in the spring, including a top-five finish at the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout where she shot rounds of 75 and 74 for a total of 149. She had the team's lowest 18-hole score with a 73 and shared the team's low 36-hole total with 149.

The Golden Eagles featured the youngest team in the conference with freshmen Sjoerdsma and Emily Wang, redshirt freshman Dean and sophomores Caitlyn Jimenez and Caleigh Clark composing the starting five for third-year head coach Hans Kersting.

Jaime Jacob of Cal State San Marcos was named the Golfer of the Year, while Samantha Cabunag of Sonoma State was the Newcomer of the Year, Courtney Cervellin of Sonoma State was the Freshman of the Year and Greg Hutton of Cal State San Marco was the Coach of the Year.
