SAN DIEGO -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team had three players named to the All-California Collegiate Athletic Association Team announced on Thursday by the conference office, including a major award winner.
Nicole Flennaugh was named the CCAA Freshman of the Year in voting by the conference women's basketball head coaches. Flennaugh becomes only the second Cal State LA women's basketball player to earn that award, joining Shanna Demus, who won the honor in the 2003-04 season. Flennaugh is also the first Golden Eagle to earn a major conference award since Tessondra Williams was named the CCAA Newcomer of the Year in the 2011-12 season.
Sydney Bordonaro, who had a tremendous season for the Golden Eagles, earned first-team All-CCAA honors, while
Mackenzie Barnes and Flennaugh both earned All-CCAA honorable mention.
Bordonaro led the Golden Eagles and was third in the conference in scoring with a 16.7 points per game average. She also set a new program single-season record for 3-pointers with 89, which led the conference. She reached double figures in scoring 23 times and scored 20 or more points 11 times, including a season-high 30 points in a win over Chico State. She set a new program record for successful 3-pointers in that game with eight, a total that was later matched twice by Flennaugh. Bordonaro hit seven 3-pointers and scored 26 points in a season-ending win at San Francisco State.
Flennaugh had one of the best freshman seasons in program history and was second on the team in scoring and 11th in the conference with 12.5 points per game. She was one of only two Golden Eagles to start all 28 games and she led the team in minutes played with 33.5 per game. Flennaugh was second on the team and third in the conference in successful 3-pointers with 66 and she was second in the CCAA in 3-point field goal percentage (.382). She tied Bordonaro's record with eight 3-pointers in games at Cal State San Bernardino and UC San Diego. In the win over the Coyotes, she was 8-of-9 from 3-point range and scored a season-high 30 points and she also had eight against the Tritons and finished with 26 points. She reached double figures in scoring 16 times and scored 20 or more points six times.
Barnes completed an outstanding four-year career with the Golden Eagles and had her best season, earning All-CCAA recognition for the first time. She was fourth on the team in scoring with 8.9 points per game and she was second on the team in rebounding with 6.6 boards per game. She reached double figures in scoring 11 times, including a season-high 17 in a win at Stanislaus State. She also reached double figures in rebounding four times, including a career-high 16 in the Golden Eagles' season-ending win at San Francisco State.
Julia Macabuhay of UC San Diego was named the CCAA Most Valuable Players, while Ugochi Anudokem of Sonoma State was the Defensive Player of the Year. Ariana Harper of Cal State Dominguez Hills was the Newcomer of the Year, Flennaugh was Freshman of the Year and Renee Jimenez of Cal State San Marcos was the Coach of the Year.
Cal State LA finished the season with a 12-16 overall record and played well down the stretch, winning three of its last four games and winding up just one game out of a playoff spot.Â
